Crowns offer a natural-looking, long-lasting way to cover up problems such as chips, decay, discolouration or the presence of a large filling.
They are used to restore shape, size and strength to improve the appearance of the tooth and are commonly made from porcelain, ceramic or even gold.
Treatment Steps
Step 1. Your dentist will prepare your affected tooth for the crown. The outer layer is removed but leaves a strong core.
Step 2. An impression is taken and sent to the laboratory to create a ‘cap’. A temporary crown may be placed to protect your tooth in between appointments.
Step 3. Once your new crown is ready, it will be fixed firmly in place with strong durable cement, thus restoring the look and functionality of your natural smile.
Aftercare
After the crown is fitted you must avoid any hard or sticky foods. Although crowns are made from a strong material it may break if subjected to unnecessary force.
Always brush and floss your teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day, attending regular dentist appointments so we are about to keep an eye on your crown and the tooth underneath.
